Dear all;

Here are my notes on our meeting.

      Regards.

Beam optics power supplies :

Because of the lack of OP programmer available on short term, the migration of the interface of the beam optics power supplies has to be postponed to November 2005. Four programs are involving these power supplies that will need to be rewritten in Java after the interface migration :

- A scaling program of the REX parameters (mostly linear scaling)

- A synoptics program (to enable physicists to easily control power supplies)

- A scanning program (VB program involving feedback loops)

- A generic configurable scanning program.

The first program is simple and raises no problem; the second has already been provided to the ISOLDE physicists and is mostly a matter of reconfigaration for the REX layout; the third and the fouth should be merged into a single Java program for which specifications should be readied for November. The VB code of the existing program is thought to be a good starting poit for this specification and the idea is to establish as soon as possible a direct contact between Thomas /Frederik with the OP programmer that will be in charge of the new program (J-L. Sanchez-Alvarez?). The coding work for the 3 programs (plus the generic Working Sets and Knobs tools)should be done between November 2005 and March 2006 so that the whole new environment will be ready for the 2006 start-up.

RF equipment :

Currently there is no high-level application programs dealing with these parameters; moreover there will be no hardware change on the PLCs that control this equipment. The migration of this part appears to be easily feasible and the CO effort will be put on that as soon as possibleaiming at completion before November 2005. As a first stage the working set / knobs should provide more functionality that the basic tools currently used and could work in parallel with these tools reducing the risk to a very low level. During the 2005/2006 shut down a high level application could probably be provided by OP programmers; this application will also be welcomed for the Rf equipment in the Linac2 and in the Linac3.

Summary :

CO will validate the technical solution for the beam optics power supplies during the June technical stop but wont deploy it before November when the OP manpower has been made available for the applications and when specs (or a very good knowledge)on the scanning program are available. For the RF equipment, CO will work on its migration immediately after the June Technical Stop, make test on a vertical slice and deploy the solution before November using the Working Sets/Knobs (as a 1st stage)that should provide functionality slightly better than what exists currently. The controls of EBIS, TRAP and the beam instrumentation will not be not be migrated before March 2006 and the date for their migration is not yet defined. Discussions are currently going on to extend beyond Oct.2006 the contract of the CO person in charge of migrating the REX controls. Thomas and Frederk will validate this approach with their REX colleagues and give us feedback; Thomas will approach J-L Sanchez to discuss the scanning program.

Dear Bertrand and Franck

Your summary from the meeting seems correct. Our comments are as follows:

1. We are positive to RF programme implementation. The minor modifications necessary have been discussed between N. Trofimov, T. Sieber and J. Marques.

2. For the application programme specification we are willing to:

* demonstrate the programmes

* show features

* describe functionality

* show where source code is found

* follow the programming work and give feedback

3. We have some question marks in connection to the time schedule. In

case a new control system for the EBIS and Trap will not be launched next shutdown we are in strong need of:

* development and reprogramming of certain features in the EBIS programme such as slow ion extraction, improved general timing, find a bug in the GFAS programme

* increased support for and detailed knowledge of the Trap labview CS when Romain Savreux leaves

* maintenance and debugging of the failing beam diagnostics FEC

Best regards

  REX team

Dear Fredrik,

Thanks for your help on the REX scanning program for OP to produce a java application for the 2006 startup. For the trap and EBIS, we indeed have no plan yet for migrating the controls and I believe that BDI has no plan either for the instrumentation. Concerning extensions of the current application programs, I'm sorry to re-assess that I have no solution in the CO group: we have neither the expertise nor the resources to handle them.
